Hexcalibur, software for game developers, 2026

Our own product: a pixel art editor with a live 3D preview

Hexcalibur is a browser-based pixel art editor for voxel game textures that we designed, built and run. You paint in 2D and see it on a 3D block in real time. Free at hexcalibur.io.

The challenge

Pixel artists who make textures for 3D voxel games paint on a flat 2D canvas, but their work lives on the faces of 3D blocks. Seams, tiling errors and lighting problems only show up after a slow export and import into the game. Hexcalibur closes that loop: paint in 2D and watch the texture update on a rotating 3D block as you go.

How it came together.

  1. 1

Paint in 2D, see it in 3D

The canvas and a live 3D preview sit side by side, and the preview updates within a frame of each stroke. A WebGL canvas composites up to 32 layers, so painting stays responsive at 512 by 512.

    Packs, not single textures

Artists make sets, like a stone block with its stairs and slab, so everything is organized into packs with shared palettes and pack-wide export.

A tool rail that reads at a glance

Sixteen tools in three clusters, ordered so the tools that apply in tilemap mode read as one run while the rest dim, with the keyboard shortcuts artists already know.

    Export for every engine

One dialog exports a ready-to-use Minecraft Java or Bedrock resource pack, a Tiled tileset, a sprite atlas, GIF or APNG animation, or multi-size PNGs, with presets grouped by engine.

Onboarding that never touches your work

Guided tours for the pack browser, the editor, animation and tilemaps, each triggered the first time you reach it. Tour content is always visual only, so a tour never changes your real work.

A landing page built to convert

One primary action, "Start painting", on every button, a sticky call to action, and a free editor with no account needed, so it's one click from the page to the first stroke.
